As we are set to begin another school year, I want you to start asking this question(as a parent, as a student, and as an educator), “What really matters?”
I had a previous assistant admin who used to say, “Rob, people are not gonna remember a ton of specifics about your classroom, but they are going to remember how you treated them.” Now, there are a few traps in that statement. First, it DOES MATTER what you teach students, and that they learn. But….it kinda rings true, right? My best teachers…I remember how I was treated and how I was valued. I also remember that I learned a lot of important things.
That brings us to Jesus. If I must be direct(ha! Am I ever not?), He is all that matters. If you really want to live(really live!), you gotta know Jesus. He has to be the Lord over your life as best you can manage. Cause when we die and we are stripped of all of our worldly titles, we are going to meet Him face to face. But wouldn’t it be nice to know Him now, truly know Him?
If I was going to give teachers one message as they begin this year, it would be from the words Psalm 90(and I have written about this before, but great verses should be revisited over and over)…
12 Teach us to number our days,
that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
13 Relent, Lord! How long will it be?
Have compassion on your servants.
14 Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love,
that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.
15 Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us,
for as many years as we have seen trouble.
16 May your deeds be shown to your servants,
your splendor to their children.
17 May the favor[a] of the Lord our God rest on us;
establish the work of our hands for us—
yes, establish the work of our hands.
Teachers. May the favor of the Lord rest upon you. May He establish the work of your hands. May the anthem of your song be about the author and perfecter of your faith – Jesus.
I will close with this. Following Jesus comes with a price tag, but man, it is worth paying. If it costs you your job, so be it. God is gonna honor that sacrifice. May we all have the courage to reject godlessness, seek His face, and proclaim the truth of our risen Savior. And may we remember the words of Jesus found inMatthew 10…
16 “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves. 17 Be on your guard; you will be handed over to the local councils and be flogged in the synagogues.
The Chosen, Season 6, trailer is out. Wow. What a reminder of our purpose and the great God who we serve!!! We serve Jesus who was beaten, scourged(flogged), and crucified on Calgary….and then rose from the dead. May our faith rest in Him.
See, from His head, His hands, His feet,
Sorrow and love flow mingled down!
Did e’er such love and sorrow meet,
Or thorns compose so rich a crown?
It comes down to one thing. Just Jesus. The blood at the base of that cross is sufficient.
Follow Him.
