We Must Guard the Hearts and Minds of Our Children (Part I)

If you believe that evil exists(and surely you do after this past week), then you must know that righteousness also exists. We must lead our children in the ways of righteousness. Wide is the path to destruction, and narrow is the path the to eternal life(only through Jesus).

If you have read anything on this site during the first year of its existence, you have heard me talk about the importance of teaching thinking/creativity and to turn away from mind numbing over assessment and data collection. We can give our children all of the knowledge under the sun, but if they don’t have the wisdom to use that knowledge, they are in serious trouble.

What has become abundantly clear is that we need to better monitor what types of information and data archives which our children have access to. Why? Evil will take any opportunity to fill those minds with falsehoods.

I used to help teach a parenting course. We invited a detective to come and speak about online influences and dangers. The detective talked about how easy it was for an outside entity to gain influence in your home. They also talked about how easily it was to collect and spread your personal information on the dark web without detection. Honestly, it would scare your pants off if you knew how easy it was.

I was listening to the Chris Plant show on Friday. A mom called in and talked about how her son had been radicalized by Marxists. She was crying. Her son had celebrated the tragic death of Charlie Kirk. What parent wants their child to celebrate death? In her mind, she had failed as a parent. The mom’s emotional story shook the normally stalwart Chris Plant. In a moment of deep empathy, Chris said that Leftist radicalization has happened to millions of children of families across this great nation – even when parents did a pretty good job of being watchful. How is that happening?

It reminds me of Mao’s China where children were taught to hate their parents. Children were taught to despise their parents and to turn their parents in to authorities if their parents refused to embrace the ideology of Mao’s China. In many cases, this resulted in their parents losing their lives to communist authorities. I read a story recently as a grown son grieved the loss of his mom. He had turned in his mom year’s earlier.

I have often warned of communism. One its key tenets is to peel children from their parent’s influence. Oddly, we saw an iteration of this about 10-15 years ago in Tennessee when veteran teachers were pushed out. Young teachers were taught to hold veteran teachers in contempt. We lost so much collective wisdom.

We must stop the indoctrination. We must actively guard the hearts of our children. I have often heard that the devil is always sitting on one shoulder of your kids and whispering in their ears. We must be the angel sitting on the other shoulder providing them a better and more Godly choice. When we fail to be active in the lives of our kids(thus leaving one shoulder void of the angel), then they are presented with only choice(devil).

In closing, we need to pray for God’s protection over our children. We need to be active in their lives, and love them. We need to turn them from sin when we can. Keep those communication lines open no matter how difficult it may be.
