TN School Voucher News and a Presidential Endorsement by Donald Trump

I really didn’t anticipate so much blog time to be dedicated to the voucher bill(Education Freedom Act) which is currently part of this week’s called session of the Tennessee Legislature. What we are witnessing are Republicans in the Tennessee Legislature valiantly trying to free students and their families from failing schools. If elected representatives are successful, they will have restored a vast portfolio of parental rights over the direction of their child’s education.

So why am I so passionate about the topic? I have been a student trapped in a failing school. I am also a conservative public educator. That isn’t an oxymoron. There are many teachers who are conservative, but sadly they have to be very careful in stating that. I know the price which students pay when they have even one year of ineffective instruction. We must give families the ability to choose to send their students to a better learning environment which allows them to maximize academic success. We must. Some of the very same systems which locked students out of school buildings during COVID are now trying to block those same students from taking their own tax dollars and choosing a better school. Oh, the irony.

School vouchers offer families the greatest form of accountability. They can vote with their feet. They can leave a bad school situation, and find a better one where their children can be successful.

So anyway, on with the news….

This is a rapidly developing story. Does it pass? We will see. I have posted a brief description of important information found in the following article. That personal description precedes each article. Each article contains pieces of information that the others do not.

The President of the United States has entered the fray. Donald Trump offered his support yesterday to Tennessee legislators trying to pass voucher legislation.

The Education Freedom Act has cleared a several committee votes. It has already cleared both the Education Committee and the Government Operations Committee. It is headed to the House Finance Committee next. If it passes the Finances Committee it could head quickly to the House Floor.

Here is a really good article about what is in the bill. $2,000 bonus for teachers. BOEs will have to adopt a resolution to accept that money.
